Is Your Body Open, Square or Shut?
When the average person puts their feet together and aims them at a target, their hips and shoulders usually face right or left of the target. Aim your body (eyes), not your feet, at a pole thirty or forty yards away. Then, bring your feet together. Next, place a club between your feet in line with the direction your feet are pointing. Step back and look at the club. If the club is aimed directly at your target (the Pole), your body lines are square. If your feet are facing right of the target, your hips and shoulders are open to your stance line. If your feet are facing left of the target, your hips and shoulders are closed to your stance line. There is a rule of thumb in the anatomical Science of body lines that produces the best swing motion for most players. Your anatomy dictates whether you swing best from an open, square or closed stance with your shoulders square to the target line, from tee to green.
