Your Anatomy, Your Distance, Your Posture

Science instruction includes an analysis of your individual anatomy and how that fits your set up to the ball and your golf swing. Everybody is built differently. One of my students is Dennis Paulson. Dennis and I are both six feet. The inseam in my pants is 32 inches and the inseam in Dennis’ pants is 30 inches. This means his torso is at least 2 inches longer than mine and his combined arm length produces a swing arc that gives him tremendous clubhead speed and several yards more distance with every club in his bag. His anatomical makeup also affects his posture at address.

Kenny Knox, a well-known short hitter off the tee, but a wizard from 100 yards in, was paired with John Daly when John won the PGA Championship at Crooked Stick. Knox said he went to work trying to hit it longer after that experience and his short game went in the toilet for two years. When you tee it up with a long hitter, don’t try to keep up with them. They likely have a built in anatomical advantage with which you can’t compete. Focus on the Art of every shot, not distance.
