Golf Tip ImageThis month's tip comes from my dear friend Sandra Palmer.

Sandra is a US Women's Open Champion. During the course of her career she won 19 LPGA events, 30 events worldwide and she made 25 straight cuts at the Dinah Shore. She also won the Dinah Shore. She was the LPGA leading money winner in 1975. That same year Golf Magazine named Sandra Golfer of the Year. Sandra was one of Harvey Penick's students for many years.

PLAN YOUR STRATEGY FOR EACH HOLE

The main objective for better golf is to lower your score. You can lower your score simply by thinking your way around the golf course.

Try this approach:

  • On each tee before you hit, visualize exactly how you want to play the hole.
  • Decide on your target and commit to it. Do the same thing for each shot you face on the hole.
  • Decide which club to use but be realistic about the distance you regularly hit it. Most golfers make the mistake of under clubbing.
  • When in trouble, assess risk vs. reward. You may be better off playing conservatively rather than trying to play a miraculous shot.
  • Consider the weather conditions. Are you into the wind or down wind?
  • Never second guess yourself. Commit to the shot and stick with it.

If you play poorly one day, forget it.
If you play poorly the next time out, review your fundamentals of grip, posture, aim, and ball position. Most mistakes are made before you swing the club.
If you play poorly for the third time in a row, go see you golf professional.
These words are from the legendary golf professional, Harvey Penick.

Sandra will be returning to Sahalee Country Club in Seattle for the spring / summer season March 4, 2006. To schedule a lesson with Sandra at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club, you can reach her on her cell phone: (206) 714-0311.

Our tip next month will return to the biomechanics of balance, part 6.

Announcements:

  • Our NEW Golf School Dates and Locations for 2006 have been posted online.

  • Coming soon: Dr. Robert Watkins, spine surgeon to the PGA Tour, just finished a video with us on trunk stabilization (core) exercises for golf. If you have attended the Golf School, you are doing part of a lower core exercise program. Dr. Watkins' new video covers both upper and lower core.

  • The cost to alumni to attend a full day golf school is $150. You may return as often as you choose at this price. If you are returning to a multiple day school, ask our golf school office staff about reduced alumni rates on the tuition for those schools as well.
